Category 5 is the Spirit Programming Board focused on preserving and implementing traditions related to sports and spirit at the University of Miami. It represents the student body and is the link between the Athletic Department and the students. Category 5 focuses on improving the in-game experiences for students to promote love of Alma Mater and cultivate supportive, notable and fun student sections. Through student-to-student communication, watch parties, giveaways, away trips, and events hosted in conjunction with Athletics, Category 5 aims to foster an infectious culture within the student body dedicated to supporting our Canes.
Category 5 is composed of the following: Chair, Vice Chair, and 10 Sports Chairs - Football, Basketball, Baseball, Olympic Sports, and Creative.
Category 5 programs around 50 events a year for 8,000 students. Some of their signature events include:
In 2024, Category 5 was named the Taco Bell Student Section of the Year for Traditions. Interested in becoming part of the most spirited organization on campus? Follow us on Instagram and TikTok for more information.

Category 5 are the leaders who program the events for the University of Miami’s Student Section. Category 5 is an agency of Student Government that was officially established in 2000. Over the last 25 years we have grown to have over 50 dedicated members focused on preserving and implementing the traditions of the University.
The mission of the organization is to cultivate a community of students that supports all Miami Hurricanes teams and athletes with passion, spirit, and unity.

The section itself is known as “The Eye” of the Category 5 storm that is brewing.
This past season Category 5 and The Eye were honored as one of the top student sections in the nation by being nationally recognized for our outstanding traditions.
You can keep up with Category 5 by following the organization on Instagram @UM_Category5.
The Eye can be found in Sections 105-116 with Category 5 being in Section 116. The events begin pregame as 3 hours before the game Category 5 hosts their tailgate where students can come receive free food and giveaways (while supplies last). Students can also find resources to help them get gameday ready such as pom poms, sign making materials and even a photobooth. Then before the game begins while the team is running out, students drape a giant Hurricane warning flag over the section to showcase we are on the way as the team runs out of the iconic tunnel smoke. Throughout the game we have the paint line. This is a tradition started in 2024 where our most spirited students get covered in custom body paint designed for each game. From the front-row, these painted students lead the chants, pump up the crowd, and bring unmatched energy to every home game. During the break between the 1st and 2nd quarter the spotlight turns over to the Student Section as Category 5 presents Storm Warning. A tradition like no-other where the students light up the Stadium in a cloud of smoke just like the storm. Lastly, to close out every game students stick around to join together win or lose and sing the alma mater.
The Eye and Category 5 can be found in Section 115-116 and in Section 107-108 alongside The Frost Band of the Hour. Category 5 begins every game with putting up cellphone lights as the Hurricanes run in and turning around and reading newspapers as the opposing team is announced. As the game is about to begin Category 5 leads the iconic “Let’s Go Canes” chant to start the game. Remember we do our chants 3 times together. Once the Canes hit their first three we have our three-point confetti go off to signal we are hot and ready to celebrate. These three traditions were created during the 2021-22 season which featured the Men’s Basketball team achieving their first ever Elite 8 appearance and Women’s Basketball team going to the second round of the tournament. To get the team and crowd re-energized before the beginning of half-time a distinguished member of the University of Miami comes and cranks the Storm Siren. This tradition was started in 2024 and has had iconic Hurricanes such as Sebastian The Ibis, Coach Cullop and various student leaders. After every Canes victory we stay together and sing the Alma Mater alongside the teams.
The Eye and Category 5 can be found at the top of the section on the third base line. At select games Category 5 does Home Run Smoke. A tradition started in 2022 which pays homage to Hurricane Smoke at football and basketball games brought to life in a new and innovative way. Throughout every game Category 5 and the Miami Maniac team up to celebrate every home run with the Maniac running through The Light with the Category 5 flag after doing the iconic Canes Spellout. During select games the 5th inning Category 5 brings beach vibes to Mark Light as giant inflatable beach balls are brought out for Hurricane Fans to enjoy and throw around. This tradition started in 2022 and highlights all the work of the students to keep the energy high during the middle-inning stretch.
The drum is the heartbeat of our soccer games, keeping the energy high from kickoff to the final whistle. It drives our chants and unites the crowd in rhythm, making sure every cheer is loud and in sync. When the drum starts, the entire student section knows it’s time to turn up the volume. Speaking about chants, we’ve got a whole playbook of chants ready to fire up the team and rattle the competition. Chant 1: Ole Go Canes (Introduced in 2024) Chant 2: When the Canes go marching in! (Introduced in 2025) Chant 3: Dale Canes (Introduced in 2025) Chant 4: Glory, Glory Hurricanes (Introduced in 2025) Chant 5: Vamos Canes! (Introduced in 2025) Oleeee Ole Ole Ole, Go Canes! Go Canes! Oh when the Canes go marching in! Oh when the Canes go marching in! Oh how I love my Miami Hurricanes! When the Canes go marching in! Oh when the Canes! Oh when the Canes! Go Marching in! Go Marching in! Oh when the Canes go marching in! Oh when the Canes go marching in! Oh how I love my Miami Hurricanes! When the Canes go marching in! Daleeeeeeeeee Daleeeeeeeeee Canes Dale Dale Dale Dale Canes Dale Dale Dale Dale Canes Glory Glory Miami! Glory Glory Miami! Glory Glory Miami! The Canes go marching ON! ON! ON! Vamos! Vamos Canes Esta noche, Te-ne-mos-que ganar! Each one has its own energy and moment. Whether it’s in English or Spanish, these chants keep the crowd moving and the spirit alive! On every corner kick for the Canes, the drum beats twice and the fans clap once in response, a simple rhythm that gets the whole crowd involved. We speed it up faster and faster until the ball is kicked, building suspense and hype as we all watch and anticipate the result of the corner kick. This was started in 2024 and continues to be an integral part of the Canes Soccer Gameday experience When the Canes score, we make sure the whole field knows it. Orange or green smoke fills the air, signaling another Hurricanes goal and sending the crowd into a frenzy. It’s a burst of color, sound, and pure celebration that makes every goal unforgettable. The Eye and Category 5 take over the first bleachers on the right side as you enter the arena, our front-row home for every volleyball match. At the start of the game, the players burst through iconic Hurricanes smoke and high-five the student section as we line up, bringing the energy from the very first serve. Throughout the match, we fire off different chants to match the moment: Chant 3: ACE! (When we get an Ace) If the game goes to a fifth set, we kick it into Cat 5’s 5th Set. This is our time to take things to the next level. This tradition, Night at the Knight, started in 2025, transforms the Knight Complex into a nightclub atmosphere, complete with pounding energy and crowd hype to fuel our players for the deciding set.Soccer

Donuts with Dan is an event featuring Athletic Director Dan Radakovich partnered with Category 5 to hand out donuts to students and engage with them in a new and exciting way. The first iteration of this event took place at Mark Light Stadium on April 15th, 2025 where the Hurricanes would defeat in-state rival Florida Atlantic University 5-4. Student Homerun Derby is the annual Canes Baseball Kickoff event for students. Beginning in 2022, students are invited to join the baseball team out onto the field and try their best to score a home-run. In 2025, along with the already established derby, President Joe Echevarria invited students to come and chat with the President while enjoying Empanadas. A fresh spin on Senior Vice President Pat Whitely’s iconic Pancakes with Pat, she invites students to join her at a baseball game to enjoy a Mark Light Shake and get to chat with the Senior VP. Every year Category 5 partners with the Herbert Wellness Center and Dolphins Cancer Challenge to partake in an outdoor cycling event on the Lakeside Patio. Students, faculty and staff join together to participate in cycling classes which help raise money to fund life-saving research at UM Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.Donuts with Dan
